Okay, so I am not too familiar with blogs. I don't follow too many of them due to my hectic schedule, so I am not sure what I'm really doing here. I'll just stick with being me, and hopefully, that's okay with you. :)
My name is Tiffani and I have three children, Mari (13,) Nia (10) and Morgan (8, soon-to-be 9.) This blog will chronicle our homeschooling as well as my trying to make money working from home. Most of us homeschoolers live in a one-income household, myself included, so I will mention a bunch of little things I do to try and bring in a couple of hundred bucks a month. I can't do full-time working at home because... I just don't want to. LOL.
Against my mother-in-law's wishes, I am homeschooling my oldest and this is our first time homeschooling! "But what about socialization? Friends?" she says, "You can't teach her things a school does! You suck as a person!" Okay, maybe not that last one, although I do feel that's the underlying message sometimes. My other two are still in public school but will be homeschooled through middle school and high school. Both my husband and I felt that teenagers these days are just too... much for our children. They discuss and do things that no child should be discussing or doing. We feel it best if we introduce these things to our children when we are ready and most importantly, when they are ready. So that is our main reason for choosing to homeschool.
The second reason is my oldest has had issues in the learning department for as far back as I can remember. She was held back in first grade in hopes that she would catch up. She didn't. I still remember her third-grade teacher telling us that her reading was Kindergarten level and her math was on par with a preschooler! We knew she was delayed (dyslexia and slow processing disorder) but never knew exactly how much! I had a "come to Jesus" talk with my daughter and we agreed that that summer would be mostly work with little play. Once summer was over, the school tested her and she was grade level in math and had a second-grade reading level! To say we were excited would be an understatement!
Today, she is still struggling with reading, but she is like the little engine that could. She never gives up.
Anywho, I'm not sure what kind of homeschooler I am. We're not Christian (which comes with its own pitfalls in the homeschooling community) but I don't mind some of the Christian curriculum floating around out there. We do some stuff on the computer and other stuff on paper, we do some notebooking (even though I kind of have no clue what I'm doing!) We don't have a dedicated room or even space for homeschooling, but we make it work.
I see so many cool-looking groups and co-ops for homeschoolers and am pretty bummed that we don't have that in our area. It can get pretty lonely while homeschooling in a small city.
Ninety-seven percent of the time, I am freaking out because I feel like I should be doing more. But there are only so many hours in the day, so for now, what I'm doing will have to suffice. :)
